About World TB Day

Throughout the UK, on March 24th, hundreds of individuals and organisations around the world will be holding TB awareness raising events to mark the day, in 1882, when Dr Robert Koch identified the bacteria that cause tuberculosis.

Dr Koch’s discovery was a crucial step forwards in diagnosing and treating this devastating illness. Yet globally, over 100 years later, 1.4 million people a year continue to die from TB – even though TB is curable. Though TB deaths are rare in the UK, TB affects over 8000 people each year – often the most marginalised in society.

This is why TB Alert is looking for health professionals and community groups that would like to hold awareness raising events on or around World TB Day.

We have lots of great ideas and FREE resources to help you start raising awareness of TB in your community, including: pens, t-shirts, handy TB symptoms checker cards, posters and information on TB tailored for specific communities at-risk of the illness. Combined impact

In 2011, over 200 TB Nurses and community groups held World TB Day events around the country – reaching tens of thousands of people. This year we hope to reach even more. We know that partnership working between third sector organisations and health professionals is one of the most effective ways to reach the most vulnerable groups with accurate information about TB. This is why we are putting TB Nurses and community groups in touch with each other, to hold joint events.
