Immunology is a rapidly developing subject with wide-ranging implications for the pharmaceutical, healthcare and biotechnology industries. Common questions include, for example: How does the immune system defend the body against infection? What goes wrong when autoimmunity develops? How can undesirable responses be controlled? Team leaders, R&D directors, and researchers at the bench all need to understand the latest developments in immunology and their implications for drug discovery and development as well as disease treatment.
An understanding of the fundamental features of the immune system is essential not only for those who work in areas directly related to infection and immunity, but also for those working in the development of biopharmaceuticals, vaccines and antibody therapy, who wish to exploit the technological advances that have resulted from our increased insight into how the system functions.

Treatment interruptions and inconsistent supply of drugs in the UK |
New research, published in the June 2011 edition of the The International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (IJTLD), has found that NHS centres treating tuberculosis in the UK commonly experience difficulties in obtaining drugs to treat both drug-susceptible and drug-resistant TB.
63% of treatment centres reported difficulties in obtaining anti-tuberculosis drugs, leading 27% to interrupt the prescribed treatment regimen and 19% to alter the regimen. 36% of centres treating multi-drug resistant TB reported difficulties obtaining second-line drugs, 16% had to interrupt the prescribed treatment regimen at least once and 5% had to alter the regimen. A lack of licensed liquid formulations for children resulted in 26% of treatment centres using unlicensed, variable-strength liquids and locally prepared suspensions.
Non IJTLD subscribers can access and download the articles from Ingenta's "Pay-per-view" option here.
