TB Alert is tackling a problem that has been with the human race for centuries – the earliest evidence of TB in humans is from a Neolithic grave near Heidelberg, Germany, dating back to 5000 BC. Over the centuries TB has taken over 1 billion lives.

Many people living in the United Kingdom today can still remember friends and family struck by TB in the first half of the last century. Sadly many loved ones were killed by TB before the cure was developed. The lucky ones who survived may have spent months or even years spent in sanatoria, unable to get on with their normal life.

We have had the means to rid the world of this deadly disease for over 50 years, yet in many countries people still do not have access to the treatment they need. TB is still taking one life every 15 seconds, and will take more lives this year than in any other year in history.

TB Alert is working towards a world where everyone, however poor, can access the lifesaving anti-TB drugs and receive effective treatment. Since 1999 our supporters’ gifts have enabled us to work with some excellent programmes, saving the lives of hundreds of people who would otherwise not have had access to TB treatment. Browse the "Our Work" pages for many examples of the difference this support has made. But, we can't solve the problem overnight. As the World Health Organisation states, a good tuberculosis programme must continue for more than 10 years to have a lasting impact on new incidence and for more than 50 years to have a chance of eradicating the disease. Unfortunately we won’t all still be around to ensure TB Alert’s programmes can continue for that long
