Our new patient support community needs your input

TB Alert is excited to have joined forces with HealthUnlocked to provide an online support community for people affected by TB. This new sites provides a friendly, helpful and respectful online meeting place for TB patients and their families. Patients can share and express their opinions, seek guidance and support and contribute information to help others through their treatment and recovery from TB. Doctors have expressed growing concerns over the recent cases of TDR-TB in India, reports the BBC. A team of doctors has been sent to Mumbai to investigate, whilst there are reports of similar 'incurable' TB cases emerging in Italy and Iran. Read more...

17/01/12Further news on 'totally' drug-resistant TB - Daily Mail

Twelve new cases of a virtually untreatable strain of TB have been reported in India, writes the Daily Mail. All 12 of the patients affected have been treated in a hospital in Mumbai and haven’t responded to any of the medication given to them. A US based TB expert said they appear to be totally resistant to any available drugs. Read more...

News has recently broken in India of the existence of at least 12 patients infected with a strain of tuberculosis which has become resistant to all the drugs currently used against the illness. Doctors in Mumbai are now calling the strain TDR-TB, for Totally Drug-Resistant. Read more…

The Health Protection Agency have released their second report on Migrant Health, which has found that 73% of TB cases reported in the UK were among people born abroad and that some migrants may have more complex health needs than the UK born population. Read more...

The latest edition of The Lancet reports on research into diagnostic devices for latent TB infection, finding that no devices can accurately predict the development of active tuberculosis. Read more...

09/12/11New report finds post natal women more susceptible to TB

A new study released today has found that Post Natal women have an ‘increased risk’ of contracting TB. According to a new UK-wide study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, the risk of TB diagnosis is significantly increased in women during the first six months after pregnancy. 07/12/11Annual HPA TB Surveillance Report

The Health Protection Agency's annual TB surveillance report has been released today. The report found that there has been a decrease in the number of TB cases in the UK between 2009 and 2010, from 8,917 to 8,483 - a decrease of 4.9 per cent. However, 1 in 20 TB patients were found to fail to complete their treatment, which increases the risk of drug-resistance. Read more...

A new curriculum has been released designed for training TB professionals, NGO’S and civil society activists at national and local levels who are involved in ACSM efforts.
